About Glenmorangie

In 1738, a brewery was built upon Morangie Farm in the Highlands region of Scotland. A century later, William Matheson acquires the farm. And equip the Morangie brewery with two stills that he purchase second-hand. And renames the brewery-converted-distillery Glenmorangie.

Moreover. Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made using malt barley. Which is mash and ferment with water source from the Tarlogie Spring. The water produce from the spring, which spends nearly a century underground being filter through layers of limestone before it is extract. Is unusually rich in minerals. In the 1980s, when development in the area threaten the spring’s water quality. Glenmorangie purchase 600 acres of land around and including the spring in order to ensure consistent water quality and adequate supply.

However. After the barley has been ferment, the wash is twice distilled through Glenmorangie’s copper-pot stills by a team of 16 distillers known as the Sixteen Men of Tain. Glenmorangie’s stills is equip with relatively small boiler pots, which increases the exposure of the whisky to the copper, resulting in a more pure flavor. In addition, the stills are nearly seventeen feet tall — the tallest of any distillery in Scotland — and as a result, produce a lighter, more refine whisky.

Cressida’s Liquid Low-Down

“Japanese whisky can be extremely rare in some cases and also very expensive. People tend not to know much about Japanese whisky as a result and think it’s very different to Scotch, but in some ways, it’s very similar in flavour as Japanese distilleries used Scotch production methods when they first started out. Hatozaki Blended is a great introduction to Japanese whisky, as it’s affordable whilst having the same level of complexity and versatility as its competitors. Its pear and oaky notes mean that it makes itself at home across a range of cocktails and occasions, as well as being delicious when sipped neat.”

Read on for more of Cressida’s expert insights…

Heaven's Door Decade Series

Heaven’s Door Decade Series #02: Straight Rye Whiskey

Buy Heaven’s Door Decade Series online. A 10-year-old rye is rare enough, but the artistry behind Heaven’s Door Decade Series II Rye makes it even more of a prize

This article is produce in partnership with Heaven’s Door

A new rye whiskey with a 10-year age statement always gets our attention. And when that rye comes from Heaven’s Door, we really perk up.

We’ve been big fans of Heaven’s Door since co-creator Bob Dylan launched the brand in 2018. The core trilogy of Straight Bourbon, Double Barrel, and Straight Rye is one of our favorite lineups to share with others (or just ourselves). And the Decade Series, which debuted last year with a 10-Year-Old Straight Bourbon, has cemented the brand’s place as one of the best premium whiskeys you can find.

Don’t take our word for it: The San Francisco World Spirits Competition just awarded Heaven’s Door Decade Series I Straight Bourbon a Double Gold medal, putting it up against a tough class of contenders.

Aged to Perfection

Now the Decade Series—which features, you guess it, whiskeys aged for 10 years—is continuing with the release of a 10-Year-Old Straight Rye. Made from a mash bill of 95 percent rye and 5 percent malt barley proof to 100. The custom blend of barrels is select by Chief Operating Officer and Blender Alex Moore. Like all Heaven’s Door whiskeys, it’s non-chill filtered, lending it more round texture and deeper flavor.

The long maturation in new char oak has create rich, complex aromas and flavors, melding wood influence with the whiskey’s underlying character create during distillation. It’s a spicy, peppery take on rye with a viscous full body and balancing notes of dry fruit, vanilla, and caramel.

Heaven’s Door is known for putting quality first. Simply having an age statement, even 10 years, isn’t enough: It’s got to taste amazing. And the Decade Series Straight Rye meets that benchmark handsomely.

This whiskey is all about intensity and complexity—flavor that gets deeper with every sip. Just as you can listen to Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” over and over again, getting something different from it every time, you can sip this whiskey and never have the same experience twice.

Not to be outdone by its predecessor, Decade Series II Straight Rye is already nabbing accolades. It recently scored 93 points at the 2023 Ultimate Spirits Challenge. However, Buy Heaven’s Door Decade Series online

Heaven’s Door Decade Series II 10-Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey Tasting Notes

Sporting a deep amber-gold color that speaks to its long time in the barrel. The rye’s aromas hit all the classic notes of a 95-5 mash bill: cinnamon-swirl bread sprinkle with caraway seeds and studded with raisins, topped with vanilla and sweet oak.

Taking a sip, there’s a texture, chewy mouthfeel thanks to its robust 50 percent ABV, which also bolsters the assertive flavors of black pepper and cloves. But the spice profile isn’t the full story, as rich oak, dark chocolate, coffee bean. And mocha round out the full palate, adding complexity and depth. The whiskey finishes as strong as it starts, with lingering notes of spice, barrel char, and warm tobacco.

We’re big believers in drinking your whiskey the way you like it. And Decade Series II 10-Year-Old Straight Rye shows well however you choose to enjoy it. A whiskey-forward cocktail, like an old fashion or Manhattan, would be especially luxurious. But with this much flavor, texture, and complexity going on, our top recommendation is to sip it neat.
